Take Refuge!

As we pass through the Valley of Tears, evil besieges us (See, the Vessel in which we are Baptized). To mitigate the direness of our predicament, God sent us a Love Note to dilute the toxicity of the Valley of Tears in the same way that sugar cubes dilute the bitterness of a cup of bad coffee. The mission of Jesus was to reverse the catastrophe of Adam and Eve - to undo the fall. He was the seed that was sent to grow the gardens of the new Eden in the Valley of Tears. Jesus was the first drop (1 John 4:19) (John 10:27-30). Jesus started the process of irrigating the Valley of Tears with love. However, he did not complete it. Our job is to complete the process. Our job is to turn the drop into a flood (Matthew 13:32) (Genesis 6:17). God wants us to pour the sweet syrup of love into the Valley of Tears. He wants us to inundate the Valley of Tears with love as the Nile river inundates Egypt.

To facilitate our project, God established naturally occurring communities of love. A community of love is set up so its members dilute the bitterness of the Valley of Tears with love as sugar cubes dilute the bitterness of a cup of bad coffee. A community of love is hospitable, not hostile, to the flourishing of love. Examples of these “structures” are family, marriage, the relationship of mother and child, and the Church. We take refuge from the evils of the Valley of Tears in communities of love.

For instance, the relationship of mother and child is a naturally occurring community of love. Abortion is wrong not because the life of the baby is destroyed. Abortion is wrong because abortion destroys a naturally occurring community of love. The relationship between a husband and a wife is a naturally occurring community of love. Adultery is wrong because it destroys this naturally occurring community of love.

The serpent and his minions try to destroy communities of love. Jesus and his allies try to preserve them. You can tell the side a person is on by his or her attitude to and treatment of communities of love that dot the Valley of Tears.

Beware anyone who advocates the destruction of any refuge where we can take shelter from the evils of the Valley of Tears. Destroying naturally occurring communities of love makes our dire predicament in the Valley of Tears worse. Beware anyone who tries to aggravate our dire predicament in the Valley of Tears. Root for anyone who tries to mitigate our dire predicament.
